Black Gold opens in the US and comes to London

Marc and Nick Francis’ documentary feature Black Gold opens in the USA this week-end (6th October). This is great news for the Screen South-supported film, which takes a close look at the coffee trade, and in particular at how multinational coffee companies rule our shopping malls and supermarkets, dominating an industry worth over $80 billion. But while we continue to pay for our lattes and cappuccinos, the price paid to coffee farmers remains so low that many have been forced to abandon their coffee fields.

The film will screen at the forthcoming BFI 50th London Film Festival on October 20th and 26th.

Digital Shorts selected for top festivals

Two of the 2005/06 ‘Close-Up’ shorts produced as part of the Screen South Digital Shorts scheme have been selected for prestigious festivals. Fish Can’t Fly has been selected for both the Raindance and Signals film festivals.

The humourous film, written and directed by Richard Murphy and produced by Scott Horsfield, takes place in a high-rise flat, where a pet fish with a suicidal death-wish edges towards a fatal drop, as an audience below endeavour to save its life…

Meanwhile Blood and Chips, written and directed by Ryan Phillips and produced by Matthew Cornett, has been selected to screen at the London Film Festival…

It’s a heatwave in Medway and in a local chip shop racial tension boils over with surprising conclusions.

Congratulations from all the team at Screen South!
