Gypo wins prestigious award!

Screen South supported low-budget feature film, Gypo, won the “Outstanding Achievement in Production” Award at The British Independent Film Awards 2005 on Wednesday night.

Rank outsiders, new filmmaker team of producer Elaine Wickham and writer/director Jan Dunn, who met on Screen South’ Good Foundations Programme in 2004, were stunned when the announcement was made at Hammersmith Palais in London on Wednesday night. Gypo is a dramatic feature film starring Pauline McLynn best known for her comedy role as Mrs Doyle in Brit TV’s Father Ted, here seen in a startlingly dramatic contrast to the familiar comedy roles she is known for. The Hollywood Reporter dubbed her “the outstanding Pauline McLynn”.

The film also stars Paul McGann, Rula Lenska and newcomer, Chloe Sirene who has gone on to work with director Paul Greengrass (Bourne Supremacy/Bloody Sunday) in his new movie, Flight 93, currently shooting at Pinewood.

The film was originally made as a calling card for the two newcomers but stunned critics at this year’s Edinburgh Film Festival and has been winning accolades in competition at film festivals all over the world.

The producer/director team are represented in the UK by Sean Gascoine at Lou Coulson Associates and were successfully wooed by top LA agents William Morris at the Edinburgh Film Festival.

Scheduled for airing on Monday 22nd August at 9pm, the documentary, by regional director Julia Stovell, tells the story of 9 year old Jordan who has an angelic face and a wicked sense of humour. He loves playing football, swapping cards with his mates and riding his new bike. But Jordan has Proteus Syndrome, an extremely rare genetic condition. The film was originally scheduled for an 11pm slot but the programmers were so impressed with it that they chose to air it at the earlier, primetime slot of 9pm.
