Greg Dyke announced as Chair of the BFI

The BFI has enthusiastically welcomed the announcement on 15th March that Greg Dyke is to become its new Chair. Greg Dyke replaces the renowned director, Anthony Minghella, who during his time as Chair introduced a strong new direction that re-energised the BFI, making it more audience facing, spotlighting the importance of the archive and opening BFI Southbank as a ‘rehearsal room’ for the National Film Centre. Speaking about his appointment, Greg Dyke said: “This is an exciting moment to be joining the BFI.  My predecessor Anthony Minghella has done a brilliant job in refocusing the BFI in a new direction and my job is to take the BFI’s ambitious strategy to the next level in both the virtual and physical worlds, so that we have a Centre that puts film right at the heart of cultural Britain and makes it the envy of the world.” Read more

Kent’s Kids Films on the Big Screen

Around 100 young people from all over Kent came together today on 13th November to celebrate the premiere of three of their own films, along the theme of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London in 2012. The three films included a news-bulletin-styled parody of three days of sporting (ahem!) excellence from Channel School, Folkestone, a feature entitled ‘Aspiration, Perspiration’ focusing on the Paralympic aspects of the Games – Kent Youth County Council and a black-and-white old fashioned newsreel visit to the Games that took place 100 years ago (Stockholm 1912) which again parodies what might have taken place at those Games – Canterbury High School. The project was funded by Kent County Council and Screen South, and run by Kidnet, a programme who will enable the young people involved to take part in an online International Community of Young Storytellers, providing a fantastic opportunity to realise the international element of a Games, for young people here in our county. TUG Wins Again

The 2006 Digital Short TUG has won its second BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY award, this time at the 24fps Festival in Texas. Written by Heather Dixon, directed by David Ward and produced by Adam Coop, the film is a fairytale set in 1890, in which a criminal turned “deck hand” grimly discovers that the truth will always surface; even if it’s not what you’re fishing for!
Congratulations to all from the Screen South team!

Whether you are writing for page or screen, Learn Writing will aim to answer questions such as: Are you really connecting with your audience? Are you writing for the right market? Why does language matter? Why do your characters do what they do? Does your story start in the right place? Is the ending strong enough? The website will contain details of forthcoming workshops and training courses, held in conjunction with Screen South delivery partner City Eye.
