Film exhibitor training opportunities

The Independent Cinema Office’s internationally acclaimed Cultural Cinema Exhibition course returns this July, offering two weeks of intensive training in all aspects of film programming. Sheffield Documentary Festival –
Meet the Market

Meet Meetmarket is Sheffield's international marketplace designed to match independent producers’ most innovative project ideas with UK and international commissioners and other financiers through 20 minute one-on-one meetings.  Participants’ feedback gave an extremely positive evaluation of MeetMarket 2007. Local Homelessness Charity Launch National
Film Competition


The Society of St James, Southampton’s local homelessness charity today launches its own film competition, The Home~less Movie Competition. The film competition asks only that the film be about homelessness and run no longer than three minutes. The competition is open to national filmmakers as well the charity’s service users and will offer a ‘buddy’ system to link up people who have experienced homelessness with filmmakers. The competition will be judged by a panel of professionals in the fields of homelessness and film, with a glitzy awards ceremony in December. MA in Feature Film at Goldsmiths

Goldsmiths, part of the University of London and a Skillset Media Academy, are currently inviting entries for their 1 year MA in Feature Film. The programme adopts a bilateral approach to the idea of cultural production through cinema. A core course on feature film will offer a comprehensive approach to the research and development of feature films, culminating in a project which can be taken into the market place. Pointless Taxi Productions in partnership with Bexleyheath Shopping Centre and Cineworld Bexleyheath are holding the first Bexley Film Festival on 11th June 2008.  Anyone wanting to submit a film for consideration should send it in DVD format to Pointless Taxi Productions,  Neighbourhood Services, 2 Nuxley Road, Belvedere, DA17 5JF.  Please remember to include your contact details so that you can be kept informed if you are successful. Call for entries for the 2008 edition of Exposures

The UK's leading competitive festival for student film and moving image is now inviting entries. This year the festival is extending its reach both in terms of the type of work that it’s looking for and where it’s taking place: Not only will it consider film work, it will also consider all moving image work, such as video and mobile ‘phone pieces, animation and visual art installations. And this year, for the first time, the festival will take place both at Cornerhouse and Urbis in Manchester for five days in November (23rd-27th).

Born out of two years’ experience running record label music video competitions, Radar has created a worldwide community of music video filmmakers, with revolutionary intentions... The second City In Motion student short film festival is inviting all students interested in short film and video to submit short films on the theme of Railways. Two prizes of £2000 will be awarded and the 2008 event will be hosted by the City of London Festival in partnership with the BFI and Barbican Film. The CTBF John Brabourne Awards

This month saw the launch of the new funding scheme from the Cinema & Television Benevolent Fund (CTBF) aimed helping new entrant industry talent – the John Brabourne Awards. There are two types of awards:
– the CTBF awards, providing cash sums of between £1,000 and £5,000 to assist with training, equipment, or costs of travel, rent, bills childcare
– the sponsored awards, providing cash sums and/or access to training, work experience, equipment or materials to a value of £1,000 - £5,000

Productionbase, an insiders’ network for Film & TV production have been keeping tabs on who is hiring, and who is available in this industry for over a decade, and they have just launched their newsletter. Word of Mouth is a fortnightly round-up of handy info and hearsay that might be useful, interesting or just plain fun for you to know. It goes out every second Tuesday of the month. FourDocs launch Discussions forum

FourDocs have just launched some discussion forums, as part of their ongoing ‘documentary democracy’ drive. FourDocs are keen to make a special appeal to people who wish to promote independent documentary to participate themselves in these forums. All comments are invited, e.g. why not talk about a FourDoc you've watched on the site or about what you like or hate in the world of documentaries, or just have a little rant about something documentary or FourDocs related, positive or negative. FourDocs also want the forums4 to be used as tools for making connections, and developing everyone technically and professionally.
